What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that a site stores in your browser to remember something between pages or between visits. Other tools, such as the browser's local storage, work in a similar way: on this page I call them all «cookies» for simplicity.
The law splits them into two broad groups. Strictly necessary cookies make the site, or a service you asked for, work and need no consent. All others, such as third-party analytics or advertising cookies, can only be used if you accept them.
Which cookies I use
This is the complete list. There are no others, hidden or third-party, beyond those shown here.
| Name | Category | Purpose | Provider and type | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
ml_consent | Strictly necessary | Remembers your analytics choice, its date, the policy version and a random code identifying it | First party, cookie on michelelaurelli.it and the blog | 6 months |
soundActive | Strictly necessary | Remembers whether you turned the site audio on or off | First party, local storage on michelelaurelli.it | Until you clear your browser data |
_ga | Analytics, consent only | Distinguishes visitors with a random identifier, to count visits | Google Analytics, first-party cookie on michelelaurelli.it | 2 years |
_ga_D429LPHJH7 | Analytics, consent only | Keeps the state of the visit session | Google Analytics, first-party cookie on michelelaurelli.it | 2 years |
Google Analytics cookies are called «first party» because they are stored on the michelelaurelli.it domain, but the data they collect is sent to Google. That is why I treat them as third-party tools in every respect and only enable them with your consent.
Google Analytics in detail
I use Google Analytics 4, provided by Google Ireland Limited, to understand how many people visit the sites, where they come from and what they read. It helps me write and design better, not to know who you are. This is how it is configured:
- The script loads only after you consent. Before that no request reaches Google, not even the cookieless pings Consent Mode would allow.
- Google Signals is off: visits are not linked to your Google account.
- Ad personalisation is off and the data is not used for advertising.
- I send Google no data that directly identifies you, such as your name or email.
- IP addresses are not logged or stored by Analytics 4.
- Data is kept for 14 months, then deleted automatically.
You can read how Google uses data from its partners' sites at policies.google.com and Google's privacy policy on this page. To block Google Analytics on every site you visit, Google offers a browser add-on.
How consent works
On your first visit I show a small box with two equally prominent buttons, «Decline» and «Accept», and the option to choose in detail. I follow the Italian supervisory authority's cookie guidelines of 10 June 2021:
- scrolling or browsing does not count as consent;
- switches for optional categories are off by default;
- declining is as easy as accepting and locks you out of nothing;
- your choice is recorded with its date, the policy version and a random code, so I can prove consent was given without knowing who you are;
- the choice lasts 6 months. I only ask again sooner if something relevant on this page changes.
Your choice applies to both michelelaurelli.it and blog.michelelaurelli.it: the two sites have the same controller, use the same tools and share the ml_consent cookie.
How to change your mind
You can review your choice at any time from «Cookie preferences», at the bottom of every page and in the site menu. If you withdraw consent, Google Analytics cookies are deleted immediately and the script stops sending data.
Analytics:
You can turn them on or off at any time. Your choice applies to the blog too.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Here are the guides for the most common ones:
If you block all cookies, including strictly necessary ones, the site will still work, but I will ask for your choice on every visit.
Links and content from other sites
The pages do not embed videos, maps, social buttons or other content loaded from external services. Fonts, images and 3D models come from my own server.
When you follow a link to another site, such as LinkedIn, GitHub, a book publisher or a newspaper, that site may set its own cookies under its own cookie policy, over which I have no control.
References and updates
